Dr. Charles Lwanga is an ethnomusicologist, as well as an acoustic and electroacoustic music composer and theorist. Lwanga completed his Ph.D in composition/theory in 2012, at the University of Pittsburgh (USA), where he is currently a doctoral candidate in ethnomusicology. Lwanga’s current research in ethnomusicology examines how popular music mediates marginalized publics in postcolonial Uganda. Dr. Lwanga is a recipient of numerous prestigious awards such as, the Fulbright Junior Fellowship, the University of Pittsburgh Arts and Sciences Teaching Fellowship, as well as the Andrew Mellon Predoctoral Fellowship. Lwanga is also winner of two prestigious awards by the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM). These include, Winner of the 2015 Robert Stevenson Prize for the best composition by an ethnomusicologist, and winner of the 2014 African Libraries student paper prize (awarded by the African Music section of SEM). Dr. Lwanga has published art music compositions with Verlag Neue Musik (Germany), Bafrik (Brazil), and Ion Sound (USA). Lwanga has also published his ethnomusicology research with top peer-reviewed journals such as, Analytical Approaches to World Music, Popular Music [forthcoming], and World Popular Music [forthcoming]. At the department of Performing Arts and Film (Makerere University), Dr. Lwanga brings a wealth of musical experience as pianist, choral conductor, composer, music theorist, and ethnomusicologist.
