..A SHORT BIO

Dr. Mercy Mirembe Ntangaare is Associate Professor of Drama at the Department of Performing Arts and Film (DPAF), Makerere University Kampala where she teaches Drama / Theatre, Dramatic Literature, Folklore, Scenic Design, Theatre Marketing and Entrepreneurship. Mirembe Ntangaare is a playwright and theatre maker, educationist, folklorist, and producer of children’s and young people’s theatre with MEBO Theatre Documentaries Limited that she founded in 2006. (www.mebotheatre.net ) She writes plays, short stories, essays, and children’s books. She enjoy the Theatre, the Choir, Folklore, Photography, Creative Writing, Cooking, Gardening, Travelling, Service to humanity, Computer Graphics and Book Design.

Research Interests: Inter / Trans-disciplinary research; Folk Arts; Biographical theatre, Drama Portals and Digital / E-Publishing.

Hobbies: Theatre, the Choir, Photography, Creative Writing, Cooking, Gardening, Travelling, Humanitarian Service; Design and Deco.

Dr. Mirembe Ntangaare is Board Member at Third Hope Africa (THA) and Fourth Heritage Initiative (4HI). THA is a not-for profit social service organization established in 2009 to give pyscho-social support to child victims of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) war of Joseph Kony in Uganda. Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest humanitarian service organization, through the Lions Club of Kampala Central since 2002. She is a Two-Star Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow, a Lions Trainer, and the District Officer responsible for the Reading Action Programme (RAP) for the Lions Year 2022-2023. In 2021-2022, Lion Mercy Mirembe Ntangaare was the Youth Programmes Coordinator) for District 411B (Uganda). The Youth Programmes include Reading Action (RAP), Peace Poster and Essay Contests, Services to Children, Youth Camps and Exchanges, Lions Quest, Leo Clubs, and mentoring Young Leaders in Service.

.Dr. Mercy Mirembe Ntangaare has a good experience in organizing public events like conferences, concerts, festivals, children’s and youth exchange and holiday programmes. For example,

A four-day scientific writing workshop for academics in public universities in East Africa held on 11-15 March 2019 in Entebbe, Uganda. The event was funded by DAAD Nairobi.

A series of ProGrant multiplier trainings for staff at public universities in East Africa, the most recent being on 29 August – 2 September 2022 at Karatina University, Kenya, done in mutual cooperation with DIES ProGrant 2016 Alumni from Uganda and Kenya. The ProGrant multiplier training hosted in Uganda took place in 2018 and 2019.

A network of theatre pedagogues and artists in Africa through the one-year African Theatre Webinar (ATW) Series hosted from Feb 2021-March 2022 together with Prof. Marion Kuester of Rostock University of Music and Theatre. ATW will have a seminar during the Conference.

The Annual symposia on “Career paths in the performing arts” for students of performing arts (2015-2019)

The 2nd Eastern Africa Theatre Institute (EATI) Regional Children’s Theatre Festival hosted over six days in 2002 in Mbarara, Uganda.

The annual MEBO Children’s Holiday Makers Programme for 2018, 2019, and 2020, themed, “Happy and Away from the Tele”, “Purposeful Holiday Making”, and “Safe, Refreshed, Engaged” respectively. The programme engages children creatively through drama, acting, speech, song, dance, children’s games, riddling, storytelling, musical instruments, and handcraft.

Currently, Convener and Chairperson of the Makerere DPAF – IDEA International Conference on Performing Arts and DPAF Golden Jubilee Celebrations 2023.
